Many years after Madan Mohan's untimely death at the age of only 51 in July 1975, his son Sanjiv Kohli discovered the tape recordings of a large number of tunes that his father had composed but that were not used in any movies. At the request of producer Yash Chopra, Sanjiv Kohli made a number of these melodies available for use in the YRF movie Veer Zaara released in 2004. The film Veer Zaara and its songs based on Madan Mohan's compositions became big hits. Madan Mohan, who died as a disillusioned man whose amazing musical output did not receive the popular and critical acclaim it deserved in his short life, would have been a happy man had he lived to taste the success and recognition of his music in Veer Zaara.
